EV chargers to fit your home

Your EV charger is just one piece of your home’s energy system.

When it’s set up properly, it can:

  • Charge your car using excess solar energy
  • Automatically use cheaper off-peak electricity
  • Work alongside your battery, not against it
  • Balance your home’s energy so nothing is overloaded

Most home chargers are 7kW, which is plenty for charging overnight.
But the real value comes from how intelligently it’s set up.

Make it part of your energy system

Most chargers will charge your car. The difference is how well yours works with everything else in your home.

It should work with:

  • Your solar panels
  • Your battery
  • Your energy tariff
  • How you use your car day to day

At The Solar House, we help you choose the right setup for your home, so everything works together properly.

Why install a charger at home?

Save money

Charging at home costs a fraction of what you'd pay at a public charger, especially overnight on a cheaper tariff or when your own solar is doing the work.

Smarter energy use

Your charger can automatically charge when energy is cheapest or when your panels are making spare power, so you don't have to think about it.

Future-proof your home

Designed to work alongside solar, batteries and changing energy tariffs, so it keeps making sense as your home and the way you use energy change.

Greater independence

Rely less on public chargers. Plug in when you get home and wake up each morning to a full battery, ready for whatever the day brings.

We design the whole system, not just the charger

Anyone can install a charger, but getting it to work properly with your home and vehicles takes expertise.

We look at:

  • Your home’s energy setup
  • Your driving habits
  • Your future plans (solar, battery, second EV)

Then we design a setup that works now and keeps working long term.

Get the setup wrong and you miss out on much of the benefit of your solar and battery.

We fit home EV chargers across South Wales, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, alongside solar panels and home battery storage. Find your nearest team: Cardiff, Cheltenham or Melksham.

Your EV charger questions

Most home chargers are 7 kW, which works with any electric car that uses the standard Type 2 plug (almost every EV sold in the UK). We'll check your car, your driveway and your electrics, and go through which charger suits how you drive.

We mainly fit Hypervolt chargers, because they're reliable, look neat on the wall and can be set to charge from spare solar or on a cheap overnight tariff. If you have a battery or solar from another brand, we'll talk you through what works best with it.

A 7 kW home charger adds roughly 25 to 30 miles of range for every hour it's plugged in, so most cars are full by the morning. How long it takes depends on your car's battery size and how empty it is.

Yes. A smart charger can top up your car using solar you'd otherwise send back to the grid, and switch to cheap overnight electricity when the sun isn't out. With a battery as well, we set everything up so the charger and battery work together rather than competing.

Usually not, but we check before anything is agreed. Some homes need a new consumer unit, or a bigger main fuse from your network operator. We notify your local network operator (DNO) about every charger we fit, as the rules require, and tell you up front if any extra work is needed.

Yes. Since 2022 every new home charger in Great Britain has to be a smart charger by law. That's good news: it means you can schedule charging for cheaper off-peak rates, use spare solar, and see what you've used in an app.

The government's EV chargepoint grant is mainly for people who live in flats or rent. Most homeowners with a driveway won't qualify, but the rules do change, so we'll check what's available for you.
