Why homeowners in Cardiff choose The Solar House

    Every kind of Cardiff home

From Victorian terraces in Canton and Roath to inter-war semis and new builds, Cardiff's roofs vary a lot. We design around yours, chimneys, dormers and all.

    No pressure

No discount deadlines and no daily follow-up calls. Take your quote home, compare it with others and come back if it makes sense. The decision is yours.

    Grid paperwork handled

Across South Wales, the network operator is National Grid Electricity Distribution. We send them your system details and handle the registrations for you.

    Down the road in Whitchurch

Our showroom is at 11 Penlline Road, Whitchurch. We look after homes across Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan, Newport, Caerphilly and the valleys.

    Our simple 4-step process

    01

    Showroom visit

Before you commit to anything, we invite you into our Cardiff showroom where we run a free Return on Investment Assessment for your home. We look at your electricity usage, your roof and how you actually live, then show you what a system would generate, what it would save and how long it would take to pay for itself. In real numbers, for your house, not a best-case example from a leaflet. And if the numbers don't stack up for your property, we'll tell you honestly rather than talk you into something that won't deliver.

    02

    Site survey

If the numbers stack up and you'd like to go ahead, one of our team will visit your home to check everything properly: the roof, the loft, your consumer unit and where the battery and inverter would sit. It's the person who understands the installation looking at the job, not a salesperson filling in a form. Once they've confirmed the details, you'll get a clear quotation for the whole project. On terraced streets, they'll also check scaffolding access at the front and back. You'll see exactly what's included, and you can take your time to decide.

    03

    Installation

Once your survey is done, your dedicated project manager will be in touch to book your installation date. They'll walk you through what happens and when, from the scaffolding to the panels and electrical work, and stay your single point of contact throughout.
If anything's ever unclear along the way, you'll know exactly who to call, and most installs are wrapped up within a couple of days.

    04

    Aftercare

Getting the panels on the roof isn't the end of the job. We connect your system to the grid, handle the registrations and paperwork, and make sure everything is performing exactly as it should before we sign it off. We'll also help you get set up with your electricity supplier so you're paid for anything you export. And when a question pops into your head six months later, about your app, your bills or adding a battery, our Penlline Road showroom is still there. Ring us or drop in.

      Your solar questions

Most roofs are. South-facing is best, but east and west-facing roofs work well too, and we'll check for shading from trees, chimneys or neighbouring buildings. If your roof isn't a good fit, we'll tell you rather than sell you something that won't deliver.

It depends on the size of the system, which way your roof faces and any shading. As a rough guide, each kilowatt of panels on a good roof in our area produces around 850 to 1,000 kWh a year. Your Return on Investment Assessment shows the figure for your own roof.

Not a salesperson. If you decide to go ahead after your showroom visit, one of our team carries out the survey. On installation day you'll meet our electricians, along with the roofing and scaffolding teams we work with, and your project manager stays your single point of contact from start to finish.

Panels sit on aluminium rails fixed to the rafters with roof hooks that slip under your tiles or slates, so the roof stays watertight. Cables run neatly into the loft and down to the inverter. The layout is designed for your roof at the survey, so we know exactly where every panel goes.

Through the Smart Export Guarantee, your electricity supplier pays you for the power you send back to the grid. You'll need your MCS certificate, and we'll help you get set up. Grants for solar are limited for most homeowners, but if you might qualify for one, we'll point you in the right direction.

Getting the panels on the roof isn't the end of the job. If a question pops into your head six months later, about your app, your bills or adding a battery, ring us or drop into the showroom. You'll speak to people who answer the phone and know your system.
