Our simple 4-step process

01

Showroom visit

Before you commit to anything, we invite you into our Melksham showroom where we run a free Return on Investment Assessment for your home. We look at your electricity usage, your roof and how you actually live, then show you what a system would generate, what it would save and how long it would take to pay for itself. In real numbers, for your house, not a best-case example from a leaflet. And if the numbers don't stack up for your property, we'll tell you honestly rather than talk you into something that won't deliver.

02

Site survey

If the numbers stack up and you'd like to go ahead, one of our team will visit your home to check everything properly: the roof, the loft, your consumer unit and where the battery and inverter would sit. It's the person who understands the installation looking at the job, not a salesperson filling in a form. Once they've confirmed the details, you'll get a clear quotation for the whole project. On older stone cottages and bungalows, they'll also check the roof structure and the best spot for the kit. You'll see exactly what's included, and you can take your time to decide.

03

Installation

Once your survey is done, your dedicated project manager will be in touch to book your installation date. They'll walk you through what happens and when, from the scaffolding to the panels and electrical work, and stay your single point of contact throughout.
If anything's ever unclear along the way, you'll know exactly who to call, and most installs are wrapped up within a couple of days.

04

Aftercare

Getting the panels on the roof isn't the end of the job. We connect your system to the grid, handle the registrations and paperwork, and make sure everything is performing exactly as it should before we sign it off. We'll also help you get set up with your electricity supplier so you're paid for anything you export. And when a question pops into your head six months later, about your app, your bills or adding a battery, our showroom in Leekes is still there. Ring us or drop in.

Why homeowners in Melksham choose The Solar House

      Estates to stone cottages

Around Melksham there are modern estates, bungalows and rural homes alongside older stone cottages. Every roof is different, so we design around yours.

      Listed and protected homes

Bradford on Avon and Corsham have many listed buildings. If yours is one, we check what's allowed and help with any application, or tell you if solar isn't right.

      Grid paperwork handled

Your network operator needs to know about your system before it goes live (in most of Wiltshire that's SSEN). We handle that and the registrations for you.

      Inside Leekes, Melksham

From our showroom in Leekes we look after homes in Melksham, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Devizes, Bath, Corsham and Westbury, with a local team to come back to.

      Savings with solar

Every home is different, so we won’t pretend there’s one number that applies to everyone.
As a guide: a typical terraced house with six panels and a small battery might save around £1,100 a year, while a large detached home with a bigger system can save £2,900 or more. Payback usually lands between four and seven years, and the panels keep working long after that.

The only way to know your number is to look at your home, your roof and your bills, which is exactly what our free Return on Investment Assessment does. There’s no obligation attached, and if the numbers don’t work for your property, we’ll be the ones to tell you.

      Your solar questions

Most roofs are. South-facing is best, but east and west-facing roofs work well too, and we'll check for shading from trees, chimneys or neighbouring buildings. If your roof isn't a good fit, we'll tell you rather than sell you something that won't deliver.

It depends on the size of the system, which way your roof faces and any shading. As a rough guide, each kilowatt of panels on a good roof in our area produces around 850 to 1,000 kWh a year. Your Return on Investment Assessment shows the figure for your own roof.

Usually not. Rooftop solar on most houses counts as permitted development. Listed buildings, some conservation areas and flats can be different, so we check before anything is agreed and help with the application if one is needed.

For many homes, yes. A battery stores the solar you don't use during the day so you can use it in the evening, and on a time-of-use tariff it can charge when electricity is cheapest. Whether it's worth it for you depends on how you live, and we'll show you the numbers either way.

After your survey you'll get a clear quotation for the whole project, so you can see exactly what's included and take your time to decide. We don't offer finance; you pay for your system directly. When you go ahead you pay a deposit, which is never more than 25% of the price and is protected by insurance, as the Renewable Energy Consumer Code requires. The final payment is due once your installation is complete, and your quotation sets out every payment and when it's due. Solar panels and batteries for homes currently have 0% VAT, which HMRC has confirmed until 31 March 2027.

Solar panels need very little maintenance. Rain keeps them clean in most cases, and there are no moving parts. Keep an eye on your app, and if anything looks unusual, ring us or drop into the showroom and we'll talk you through it.
