The story of this install

A bad experience in the family

Steve wanted to save money, saw solar as a sound investment and liked that it's good for the environment. He'd also seen how it can go wrong: his son had used a different company and it hadn't been a good experience.

Searching online, The Solar House kept popping up. What tipped it was having a local shop in Cheltenham. “Local presence, pop into the shop and say hello,” as Steve put it.

Designed around a steep south-facing roof

Steve's tiled, hipped roof has a big face pointing almost due south at a steep 47° pitch, which is ideal for solar. We put 16 of the 19 JA Solar 500W panels there and three more on a smaller side face, 9.5kWp in all.

The storage lives in the garage: a Tesla Powerwall 3 with a Powerwall 3 Expansion, 27kWh in total, run through Tesla's Backup Gateway so the house can keep going if the grid goes down. A Tesla EV charger went in on its own circuit at the same time.

Kate kept him posted

Steve rated the install “very good, excellent”, and singled out the updates from Kate in our office: “very on it.” The system was switched on in February 2026, with MCS certification and the network operator approval handled for him.

These days Steve enjoys the money-saving side and keeping an eye on the app to see what's going on. His advice to anyone thinking about it: “If you've got the capital, make the investment.” And to anyone considering The Solar House? “Crack on, you won't regret it.”
